Amputee Clinic. TMC provides long-term care for people
who have lost a limb due to traumatic injury or disease. We work with our
patients on issues of mobility, self-care, prosthetic and other needs. Our
physiatrists (physical medicine & rehabilitation physicians) work closely
with surgeons, prosthetists, and therapists.
Lymphedema Prevention and Management. Lymphedema
occurs when a clear fluid known as lymphatic fluid builds up in the soft
tissues of your body, usually in an arm or leg. The most common causes of
secondary lymphedema are surgery or radiation treatment for certain types of
cancer, such as breast and testicular cancers. At TMC, we have certified
specialists for treatment of lymphedema massage and wrapping. Patients
receiving therapy learn to manage lymphedema on their own. Our therapists
provide patient education about lymphedema treatment and demonstrations to
the family to ensure ongoing home therapy.
Vestibular/Balance Program. Dizziness is the third most
common complaint made to physicians. Each year more than two million people visit
a doctor for dizziness. At TMC, we have a physical therapist that has been
specially trained and certified in treating dizziness. Vestibular and
Balance Rehabilitation Therapy (VBRT) has been shown to improve balance,
decrease risk of falling, improve vision and in some cases, can help
eliminate your dizziness altogether. Patients will be assessed on muscle
strength, visual, balance and sensory function. Treatment may include
the following:
- Head positioning maneuvers
- Exercises to help your vision
- Exercises to help your balance
- Extensive education
Wound Care. Wounds that don't heal can become
infected, spread and become painful. At TMC, certified wound care
specialists offer treatment for a minor burns, pressure ulcers, diabetic and
venous stasis ulcers.
Certified Hand Therapist. Hand therapy helps a patient
regain maximum use of his or her hand after injury, surgery or the onset of
disease. At TMC, the goal in treatment is to return patients back to optimal
function in their daily lives of work, leisure and self-care. Our certified
hand therapists teach exercises and create custom splints to help the hand
heal and protect it from additional injury.
Urinary Incontinence/Pelvic Floor Dysfunction. More than
14 million Americans suffer from urinary incontinence (bladder leakage) and
more than 85 percent of these are women. Common causes include childbirth,
obesity, surgeries, medications, diabetes, stroke and menopausal changes. At
TMC, our therapists use exercise, and education to increase muscle strength
and control and decrease pain. Treatment includes:
- Pelvic floor muscle and
abdominal strengthening
- Bladder training
- Education in bladder irritants and
urge suppression techniques
- Use of computerized EMG for biofeedback
- Overall
re-education of postural muscles
