A Notice to Our Patients

Truman Medical Centers (TMC) is committed to protecting the confidentiality and security of our patients’ information. We have no evidence that anyone accessed, viewed or misused patient information. But we do have to let you know about a stolen password protected employee laptop.

On July 18, 2019, we learned that items had been stolen from an employee’s car, including the employee’s work laptop. We immediately contacted the police and began an investigation. As part of our investigation, we conducted a comprehensive review of the items stored on the laptop. On October 29, 2019, the review identified patient information was stored on the laptop, which may have included patient names, dates of birth, medical record or patient account numbers, Social Security numbers, health insurance information, and/or limited treatment or clinical information, such as diagnoses, provider names, and dates of service.

This incident did not affect all TMC patients; but only those patients who had information stored on the stolen laptop.

Again, there is no evidence that anyone accessed, viewed or misused any patient information. However, in an abundance of caution, we are mailing letters to patients whose information was on the laptop. We have also established a dedicated toll-free call center to answer questions for affected patients. If you have questions, please call 844-931-1879. The hours of operation will be Monday through Friday from 8:00am to 5:30pm central time.  For those patients whose Social Security number was stored on the laptop, we are offering complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services. We also recommend that affected patients review any statements they receive from their health insurers or healthcare providers. If they see services they did not receive, they should contact the insurer or provider immediately.

We deeply regret any concern or inconvenience this incident may cause. We remain committed to protecting the confidentiality and security of our patients’ information. To help prevent something like this from happening in the future, we provided additional education to our employees about our policies against leaving laptops unattended. We are also making additional security enhancements, including installing controls on employee laptops.
