The Cost of Smoking in Missouri
Tobacco use is having a devastating impact on the health of Missourians and has created a huge financial burden. In 2002, smoking cost Missouri $2.4 billion in lost productivity costs and $1.97 billion in direct medical costs; totaling $4.3 billion or $760 for every man, woman and child. For years, TMC has been at the forefront of educating and helping our patients and employees to stop smoking. In addition to becoming smoke-free for employees, patients and visitors, TMC also announced this year that it will no longer hire smokers. New Clinic for Those Suffering From Lymphedema.
Each year, millions of people suffer from lymphedema. Lymphedema, a swelling of a body part (usually a limb) develops after damage to lymph nodes due to surgery, biopsy, trauma, infection or radiation treatment. While no cure exists for lymphedema, effective treatments can control the condition and prevent progression. TMC Hospital Hill recently announced the creation of a vein, lymphatic, ulcer and hepato-biliary clinic. A complete and state of the art range of therapeutic options is available from injections to minimally invasive outpatient operations to extensive stripping. For more information on lymphedema and the new clinic, contact Marla Shelton at 816-404-0090.
